Writing Rocks! Hits the Publishing World

Our 4th and 5th grade writing club hit a new high yesterday as we published our works on Smashwords. Most of the writing, revising, editing, and basic formatting was done by none other than our amazing kiddos! I'm so proud of them!

How to Create Your Own Blog

Hello my Neipchens!
Mrs. Isaacs here, and I wanted to explain how to make your own blog. We can work on the blogs at school, but, unfortunately, the firewall won't let me create blogs, and so below you'll find step-by-step instructions on making your blog.

If you are still confused and need help, bring me your email address and password. I'll take it home, and create a default blog and then we can work on the design of it at school. If you create a blog at home, please make sure that you know your URL, email address, and password so you can get on it at school to change things around. I'm working on a scroll widget with all of your blogs, so we must have a grab button for everyone and all the blogs set up before summer starts! :-)

How to create your own blog:
Make a gmail email address.
Click on the "Create a Blog" button on the top right corner of this blog. There you will be taken to
a page that looks like this:

That will take you to a page that looks like this:

The final step creates the blog. Remember, we need your URL, your email address and password in order to work on it here at school!
Comment if you have a question, and I'll comment back when I check!
Have fun, and remember, your voice matters!

Learning to Play with Pictures!

I've had quite a few kiddo's ask how to make jpegs and manipulate the size so they'll fit across the top of their blog and act as a header. While I use Image composer, which is an archaic program, (if it aint broke, don't fix it :-) I don't know what everyone has at home. I'd love for all the kiddo's to learn Photoshop, but that takes money.

And so when I ran across this little jewel of a freebie I had to share! It's called pixlr.com. It has similar features to Photoshop, and I'd love for the kiddo's to play! Now, you do have to sign up, which basically involves giving them your email and creating a password, but once that's taken care of you can create, layer, and put words on any picture you'd like. Too, some of the tools (such as the lasso, the wand, etc) are the same as Photoshop, so learn this first and when we get to that stage it'll be a breeze!

Now I'm learning this one with you, so I'm no expert. But if you have a questions feel free to post one and I'll see if I can't find the answer. As always, go play, have fun, be fearless, and learn something new!

My Vacation

my
VACATION!!!!!
Last spring I went to Tennessee with my family. It took about five hours. When we finally got there, we were a day early. The hotel gave us an extra day so we unpacked, and we went to the pool. It was a lot FUN. The warm breeze blew, and the water rapped around my ankles.  Then we went to dinner. It was the saddest dinner my whole ten years. This dad was yelling at his teenage daughter, and she was crying her eyes out. The dad was yelling so loud every one could hear him. Her mother was saying to the dad SHUT UP. When my Aunt Elena and I went in the bathroom and saw the girl crying. I said, “Are you okay.” She said, “Yeah, thanks.”

After we ate, we went to Dollywood for a half day. We went to water rides,
and we got soaked on every ride!!! When we went back to the hotel, we realized we were locked out of the room. Cousin Anthony and I joked that we thought a bear was in the room. We finally got a key, and the whole family watched the basketball game. I fell asleep in the middle of the game. UK won! YEAH!!!!! The next morning we were going to the water park. It was really fun, but my eyes burned. It felt like lemon in my eyes. Everyone wanted to watch the volleyball game, and so we headed back to the hotel. The next morning, my family went to Waffle House.  I ordered pancakes, and the lady said, “This was WAFFLE HOUSE silly!” I told her I was still tired and wasn’t up yet!!!!!!!

After breakfast, we found a place to go horseback riding. It was about 30 minutes away from the hotel. I had to wear a helmet, but the rest of the family didn’t. My horses name was Cinderella. She was brown and had beautiful blue eyes. We rode the horses about 2 miles. It was so fun! And we took the horses through the water where there was a small waterfall. I wanted to ride again, but it was our last day. We went to the hotel and packed up and went to dinner and came home and went to my bed then told everyone at school what I did on my vacation!!!!

Scorpia

 An Alex Rider adventure.

Anthony Horowitz

Everybody says that Alex Rider is the spitting image of his father. Alex knows nothing about his father, also that he died in a so-called Airplane crash. And Alex wants to know more. Also at Yassen Geogrovich’s death bed he speaks his final words to Alex “Your father was a great friend of mine. We were partners. He was a killer like me. He even saved my life once. Go to Venice. Find Scorpia, and you will find your destiny…”  But in Alex’s new adventure he will seek out this Scorpia and he will know more about his father.
I liked this book because of the action and adventure on every page. It really pushes the book forward. Like when Alex encounters a Scorpia agent and throws him in an underground cell, and there is a flood coming in Venice and from the walls almost green from being submerged in water several times. He has to find a way out or he will drown and die. He finds a hole in the ground and squeezes his way into the tunnel; he hopes that the tunnel leads out or he will die. That’s why I really loved this book.

This series of books is not just for kids, but for young adult readers too. Check out the rest of the Alex rider series. I would rate this book 4.5 paws.

Welcome to the Outback!

One night for dinner my dad and I went to outback steak house (out back is a sit down restaurant that serves different kinds of food) and we were hungry and had not made a reservation. They let us in right away and the food got out really fast. The food was super good.

My opinion is that the food was awesome. I ordered the kids and the steak was good. One reason I liked the steak it was tender, juicy, and cooked the way I like it.

I did not like how long we had to wait in line to get in. We had to wait 45 minutes then we saw somebody that got there before us my dad asked why we had not been called. She said that they had not spelled our last name right so they delete our reservation. After that they were really nice to us.

We liked the food and had a good time. Overall I think I had a good dinner, I give Out Back 3 paws.

The Grand Canyon

I can’t believe it! We were driving to the Grand Canyon! I was so excited. Then I thought hey, how was the Grand Canyon formed? By an earthquake or a volcanic eruption? Then the car stopped. I looked up from of my thoughts. WOW, no time to think, we’re here! I picked up a brochure at the entrance. It had a lot of information in it, like this.

Weathering

Weathering is the process that the Grand Canyon was formed. It wasn’t formed by a volcano or an earthquake it was weathering. Weathering is the process of wind, water, or ice breaking down rock into sediment. An example is it could happen by wind picking up sand or other minerals and blowing them into the sides of the Grand Canyon making it wider. Another example of a way how weathering carves the Grand Canyon is by the Colorado River. The Colorado River cuts through the Grand Canyon, wearing away the bottom of the canyon making it deeper. This process takes millions of years. For example scientists believe that it took 6 million years to carve the Grand Canyon. That’s a very, very long time!

Erosion

Erosion is the process that helped the Grand Canyon form.it helped move away the sediment that weathering brought. Erosion is when water, wind, gravity, or ice picks up and carries away weathered rock (sediment) and soil, and deposits it in a new location. An example for water erosion is the Colorado River. It cuts through the canyon picking up weathered rock and moving it somewhere else. An example of rain erosion is the rain washing down sediment from the canyon walls. An example of wind eroding the Grand Canyon is the wind blowing away the sediment to a new place. This process also take is a very long time. It took millions of years to erode the Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon Today

The Grand Canyon today is giant! It is approximately 1,609 meters at its deepest point. That’s 5,208 feet! Weathering played a big part in forming the Grand Canyon. It made the canyon deeper and wider. Erosion also played a big part in forming the Grand Canyon. It moved unwanted sediment to new locations. The Grand Canyon is a national park now. President Theodore Roosevelt declared it a national park on January 11, 1908. Ever since then nobody can change the Grand Canyon. You can do a lot of things for recreation at the Grand Canyon. You could hike in the Canyon, you could bike the Canyon, and you could raft in the Colorado River. There is many things you could do in the Canyon. As you can see the Grand Canyon is a very interesting land form. Weathering and erosion played a big part in forming the Grand Canyon. You should take the time to learn more about the Canyon. It is truly amazing. Book a trip today, and see all the wonderful sites!

Go Green!

The other day my friends and I saw lots of trash in my neighborhood. We even threw away a box that could be recycled. We saw all the trash decided to hang up signs to tell people to stop littering.

Littering is a terrible thing to do, so don’t litter. Littering pollutes the earth and makes the earth nasty. Littering is when people throw things on the ground that could go in the trash or be recycled. This pollutes the earth. For example, because of plastic pop rings hundreds of birds die every year.   In case you didn’t know, pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that causes adverse change.

I can’t believe someone would litter on our street! That is terrible! We were going to hang up more signs after we got a drink, but I had to go home.
